Now, dont get me wrong, I'm not scared or anxious flying but I hate it. The measures that need to be taken for me to be comfortable in an airline seat require getting an exit row or upgrading. It'd be worth it if I had the money to do so or the seats were available but, alas, this is rarely the case. The flight from ATL to PHX somehow arrived 50 minutes early. Aren't these things supposed to be carefully planned out and fairly accurate? I mean, it's usually "this flight will be 1hr37min" and it's right on the money. Not so for both of my flights. The little turbo prop plane from PHX to FLG was supposed to take us that distance in about an hour but it took 35 minutes and was, by far, the roughest flight I've ever been on. I'm told it's typical and that some flights are cancelled due to the high winds at times.
Here's a little video of what digital cameras on cell phones do to moving propellers. This, I've heard, is because each frame of video is taken by scanning form top to bottom. This takes time as opposed to tradition video cameras taking snapshots of that exact instant of each frame.
In the airport there is no one at the Hertz counter. After a delay and not having the right rental car for my I stupidly upgrade. Hey, free upgrades dont come every day, right? Well, I end up with a HUGE 9 passenger Chevy Yukon. Looking out the back window I feel like I'm driving a school bus. Since gas is expensive (though not any worse out here than GA. $3.65 today)and this beast gets about 15mpg I return it later than night after taking a trip almost all the way to Sedona. Traffic was terrible. Here's a couple of videos from my drive out there in the bus.
**the other will be added once it uploads**
Pics from the drive up to the Lowell Observatory
A few pics from around the Oak Creek Canyon/Sedona area
After a tasty dinner at Beaver Street Brewery (good pizza and house stout) I headed back to the hotel. Given the time difference and exhausting day of travel bed time was about 9:30 despite my best efforts to not be lame. This meant that I woke up about 2am and had a hard time getting back to sleep. Finally got up around 7 for the amazingly disappointing continental breakfast at Days Inn I40. Tiny bowls for cereal, non-working toaster, no bananas. Meh.
The drive from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon itself is about 80 miles (78.5 by Google Maps but who's counting?) and the scenery getting there is amazing. Long stretches of open roads, Kaibab and Coconino Nation Forests as well as a big snowcapped mountain that I cant find the name of at the moment. I've been to the GC before but it was on a limited time frame. I wish that I could hike it or take a helicopter tour but I'm not an experienced hiker and didnt have the moolah for the choppah ride. Not too much to say about it other than no pictures or videos can to the scale of this place justice. The views were spectacular and remember, the Colorado River is between 5000 and 6000ft below the rim and it was a few miles away so I couldnt get a decent shot but see if you can spot it in some of the other pics.
